Join in Virtual Lobby Week

The American Association for Respiratory Care is having a Virtual Lobby Week from Monday March 20 through April 4 and we need you to join in.

On April 4 over 120 respiratory therapists and pulmonary patients from across the country will be in Washington, DC to lobby their Congressional delegations in support of AARC’s 2017 legislative agenda.

With a new Administration and Republican-controlled Congress, it is unclear what will happen with telehealth legislation moving forward.  So, for 2017 our request is to include respiratory therapists in any telehealth legislation introduced into this Congress rather than supporting a single bill.  We are also asking Congress to include language in the FY 2018 Labor-HHS Appropriations Report that would task the Medicare program to conduct an analysis of COPD claims data and report back to Congress on the findings.  Respiratory therapists are not recognized as Medicare providers, so an analysis by Medicare of claims data will help demonstrate the clinical expertise and value respiratory therapists bring to improving their patients’ health outcomes in a variety of settings.

Before these grassroot volunteers hit the halls of Congress, we want to pave the way for them by flooding members of Congress, both Senators and House Members with our messages.  A number of respiratory therapists who will be on Capitol Hill on April 4 will be “tweeting” about their experiences as they happen. You can follow their updates from the Virtual Lobby Week site.

Besides hearing from respiratory therapists, it’s very important that members of Congress hear from patients, family, friends and caregivers. Senators and House Members listen intently to voters from home and especially from those whose health can be improved when they have greater access to respiratory therapists.

If you have access to a computer you can join the effort from anywhere. Go to our Capitol Connection site to read all about the legislative initiative and learn how easy it is to participate in this important event. We have provided a number of letters pegged to the writer for you to use or make more personal as you see fit.

It’s simple, it’s easy and it’s important. So don’t delay — start today!
