Diagnosing Mesothelioma

  • Medical history and physical examination, to include review of possible asbestos exposures
  • X-Ray of chest and abdomen
  • Pulmonary function testing
  • CAT scan, provides cross-sectional pictures of the body
  • MRI, a procedure in which radio waves and a powerful magnet linked to a computer are used to create detailed pictures of areas inside the body. These pictures can show the difference between normal and diseased tissue.
  • Thorascopic biopsy (a small incision is made in the chest wall and tissue is obtained for testing)
  • Positron emission tomography (PET scan), is good in detecting the spread of the cancer
