Why is this medication prescribed?

Combivent is used to reduce bronchospasm in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients.

When should it be used?

Combivent is used in people with COPD who are already using a regular aerosol bronchodilator, such as albuterol, but continue to have evidence of bronchospasm.

Typical dosing and age-specific information:

The typical dose of Combivent is two inhalations, four times a day. Patients may take additional inhalations as required; however, the total number of inhalations should not exceed 12 in 24 hours. This medication is only used in adults, as safety and efficacy have not been determined with children.

How should this medication be used?

What special instructions should I follow while using this medication?

The Combivent metered-dose inhaler canister should be used with Combivent metered-dose inhaler actuator only. The canister should be discarded after the labeled number of actuations (puffs) has been used. The amount of medication in each actuation cannot be assured after this point.

What side effects can this medication cause?

  • paradoxical bronchospasm,

  • dizziness
  • nervousness or tremor
  • hoarseness
  • insomnia or fatigue
  • muscle aches
  • increased sputum
  • bad taste
  • urinary tract infection or dysuria
  • headache
  • flu
  • chest pain
  • edema
  • dry mouth
  • diarrhea or heartburn
  • tachycardia or increased heart rate
  • hypertension

Use this medication with caution if you have a cardiovascular disorder, especially coronary insufficiency, cardiac arrhythmias, and/or hypertension. Use with caution if you have narrow-angle glaucoma, prostatic hypertrophy, bladder-neck obstruction, convulsive disorders, hyperthyroidism, diabetic mellitus, kidney or liver disease, or if you are unusually responsive to other bronchodilators.

What other precautions should I follow while using this medication?

This drug has a history of hypersensitivity to soya lecithin or related food products, such as soybean and peanuts.

What storage conditions are necessary for this medication?

Store Combivent inhaler between 59°F (15°C) and 86°F (30°C). Avoid excess humidity. For optimal results, the canister should be at room temperature before use. Shake well before using.
