Why is this medication prescribed?

Cromolyn is used to reduce airway swelling in the lungs for individuals with asthma. It is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, which works by preventing certain inflammatory cells in the lungs from releasing substances that can cause asthma symptoms.

When should it be used?

Cromolyn must be used on a regular basis to be effective, even when you have no asthma symptoms. It is not an effective medication for use during an acute asthma episode.

Typical dosing and age-specific information:

This medication is delivered by a metered dose inhaler device or can be nebulized in its solution form.

Proper technique when using a metered dose inhaler is essential. Shake the inhaler well before using. For best results, metered dose inhalers should be used with holding chambers. Adults and children 12 years of age and over:

Two "puffs" (metered doses) from inhaler, four times daily, given at regular intervals.

Children: 20 mg nebulizer solution dissolved in normal saline and given by nebulizer ever 4-6 hours.

How should this medication be used?

To be of benefit, Cromolyn should be taken on a regular basis as prescribed, even when you are feeling well. It may be up to four weeks or more after starting this medicine before it's full benefit is felt. Proper inhaler technique is essential to receiving an effective dose and maximizing the medication's effectiveness.

What special instructions should I follow while using this medication?

Use this medicine as directed by your doctor. Do not stop taking this medication without first checking with your doctor.

What side effects can this medication cause?

As your body adjusts to this medication, Cromolyn may cause:

  • lightheadedness
  • headache
  • dizziness
  • dry mouth
  • irritated throat or hoarseness
  • bad taste in the mouth
  • nausea

What other precautions should I follow while using this medication?

Store Cromolyn inhaler at room temperature between 59°F-86°F, away from heat and open flame. For optimal results, the canister should be at room temperature before use. Shake well before using.
