Why is this medication prescribed?

When should it be used?

Formoterol should be used on a routine basis to prevent asthma symptoms from occurring. Formoterol should be used twice daily, typically morning and evening.

Typical dosing and age-specific information:

Your doctor will prescribe the appropriate dosage of this medication. Always follow the doctor's order or the directions on the label.

Typically, for adults and children 12 years of age and older, one capsule of formoterol is placed into the Aerolizer and inhaled. Formoterol is generally taken twice daily.

Contact your doctor or pharmacist with specific questions related to use of the Aerolizer or medication dosage. In order for this medication to prevent asthma attacks, it must be used every day in regularly spaced doses, as ordered by your doctor.

How should this medication be used?

Formoterol comes as a dry powder inhaler. A capsule containing the medication is supplied in a foil package. One capsule of Formoterol should be removed from the foil package at a time and placed in the base of the Foradil Aerolizer. The Aerolizer is then closed tightly, and the buttons on either side are pushed in once to puncture the capsule. The medication is then inhaled from the top, or mouthpiece, of the Aerolizer. Discard the empty capsule after the medication is inhaled. The Formoterol capsule should not be swallowed.
