Why is this medication prescribed?

This medication is used to prevent or treat chest tightness, shortness of breath, troubled breathing and wheezing associated with bronchospasm. Levalbuterol opens up the bronchial tubes (air passages) of the lung.

When should it be used?

Xopenex should be used to stop an asthma attack or asthma symptoms that need immediate attention. This medication works within 5 minutes and lasts for up to 6 hours. Xopenex is breathed in through the mouth by using a nebulizer.

Typical dosing and age-specific information:

Adults and children 6 years of age and older: 0.31 mg., 0.63 mg, or 1.25 mg three times a day, every six to eight hours, inhaled from a nebulizer.

This medication has been tested in children 6 years of age and older. Your doctor must determine use and dose for children less than 6 years of age.

Dosing may be different for each patient; always follow your doctor's instructions or directions on the label.

How should this medication be used?

This medication is used in a nebulizer with a mask or mouthpiece, and is taken by inhalation over a period of 5 to 15 minutes.

What special instructions should I follow while using this medication?

If you miss a dose of this medicine, use it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double dose. Always use a nebulizer with a mouthpiece or a well-fitting mask. Do not use the "blow-by" method for taking nebulizer medication, as it is not very effective.

What side effects can this medication cause?

Often, the medication causes shaky hands, fast heartbeat, chest pain, or headache.

Call your doctor if side effects do not go away.

What other precautions should I follow while using this medication?

Do not use if solution becomes cloudy. Do not mix another inhalation medicine with Xopenex in the nebulizer unless you are told to do so by your health care professional.

What storage conditions are necessary for this medication?

Store away from heat and direct light, in the foil pouch. Once the foil pouch is opened use the medicine within 2 weeks. Do not keep outdated medicine. Be sure to keep out of reach of children.
