Why is this medication prescribed?

This medication is used to prevent and control symptoms of asthma, such as wheezing, cough, and shortness of breath.

When should it be used?

Salmeterol is used twice a day to prevent asthma symptoms, typically morning and evening. This medication starts working in about 20 minutes and last for 12 hours. Salmeterol is not used to relieve an attack that has already started. It does not stop an asthma attack. For relief of an asthma attack that has already started, you should use another medicine that starts working faster then Salmeterol.

Typical dosing and age-specific information:

Inhaled from a metered dose inhaler (MDI) using a valved holding chamber:

Adults and children over 12 years of age should take two inhalations (42 mcg), 2 times per day (morning and evening).

Inhaled from a diskus (powder):

Children 4 years and over, should take one inhalation (50 mcg), 2 times per day (morning and evening).

Dosing may be different for each patient; always follow your doctor's instructions or directions on the label.

How should this medication be used?

Doses of Serevent should never be taken more than two times a day or less than 12 hours apart.

What special instructions should I follow while using this medication?

For prevention of asthma induced by exercise, take Serevent 30-60 minutes before activity to prevent tighting of airways.

What side effects can this medication cause?

Shaky hands, "hyper" feeling, fast heartbeat, chest pain, or headache are possible side effects. Call your doctor if side effects do not go away.

What other precautions should I follow while using this medication?

Shake canister well before using. Reorder medication before you run out. See inhaler label for number of puffs per canister.

What storage conditions are necessary for this medication?

Store the Serevent metered-dose inhaler canister from 15°-30°C (59°-86°F). For optimal results, the canister should be at room temperature before use. Shake well before using. Store the Serevent dry powder diskus from 20°-25°C (68°-77°F) in a dry place.
