Tiotropium

How Supplied? Tiotropium powder is supplied in capsules containing tiotropium 18 µg (as tiotropium bromide monohydrate) and lactose monohydrate (as the carrier).

Why is this Medication prescribed:
SPIRIVA® HandiHaler® (tiotropium bromide inhalation powder) is a medicine for the regular (maintenance) treatment of bronchospasm (airway narrowing) associated with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

When should it be used: Tiotropium is usually inhaled once a day in the morning or evening. To help you remember to inhale tiotropium, inhale it around the same time every day. Tiotropium comes as a capsule to use with a specially designed inhaler. You will use the inhaler to breathe in the dry powder contained in the capsulesFollow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Use tiotropium exactly as directed. Do not inhale more or less of it or inhale it more often than prescribed by your doctor.Tiotropium will only work if you use the inhaler it comes with to inhale the powder in the capsules. Never swallow tiotropium capsules and never try to inhale them using any other inhaler. Never use your tiotropium inhaler to take any other medication.Do not use tiotropium to treat a sudden attack of wheezing or shortness of breath.

Typical Dosing:
SPIRIVA HandiHaler should be used once every day. It is not a rescue medicine. Rescue medicines are used to help you catch your breath when symptoms suddenly get worse. With SPIRIVA, you will still need a rescue medicine, but you may not need to use it as often. If you have any questions about taking SPIRIVA, talk to your doctor.

Side Effects:
Tiotropium may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

  1. dry mouth
  2. constipation
  3. stomach pain
  4. vomiting
  5. indigestion
  6. muscle pain
  7. nosebleed
  8. runny nose
  9. sneezing
  10. painful white patches in mouth
