Why is this medication prescribed?

Triamcinolone, a corticosteroid, is used to prevent airway inflammation, wheezing, shortness of breath, or troubled breathing caused by asthma or other lung diseases.

When should it be used?

Azmacort should be used routinely on a daily basis.

Typical dosing and age-specific information:

The dose of these medicines will be different for different patients. Always follow the doctor's orders or the directions on the label.

Adults: Typical adult dosing is 2 inhalations three to four times per day, or 4 inhalations given twice daily. Maximum inhalations are not to exceed 16 daily.

Children: Typical dosing for children 6 to 12 years of age is 1 or 2 inhalations three to four times per day. Maximum inhalations are not to exceed 12 daily.

How should this medication be used?

Azmacort comes with its own spacer attached. Otherwise, it is used in the same manner as other metered dose inhalers. When using Azmacort metered dose inhaler, shake the inhaler well before using. What special instructions should I follow while using this medication?

Use this medicine as directed by your doctor. Do not stop taking this medication without first checking with your doctor.

What side effects can this medication cause?

Side effects from triamcinolone are not common. Contact your doctor if any of the following symptoms are severe:

  • dry, or irritated throat and mouth
  • cough
  • difficult or painful speech

If you experience any of the following symptoms, contact your doctor immediately:

  • skin rash
  • increased difficulty breathing
  • white spots or sores in your mouth
  • swollen face, lower legs, ankles
  • vision problems
  • muscle weakness

What other precautions should I follow while using this medication?

Your doctor should check your progress at regular visits. Do not stop taking this medicine without first checking with your doctor. Check with your doctor if your condition reappears or worsens after the dose has been reduced or treatment with this medicine has stopped.

What storage conditions are necessary for this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children. Store away from heat and direct light. Heat or moisture may cause the medicine to break down. For optimal results, the canister should be at room temperature before use. Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed.
