Quitlines Help Smokers Kick the Habit

Looking for a quick, easy, and free way to get help with smoking cessation? If you live in one of 34 states, the first place to go for assistance is your state’s Quitline. These toll free telephone numbers lead straight to professional assistance on quitting, including confidential telephone counseling services provided in multiple languages and at convenient hours of the day.

Do Quitlines really help people stop smoking? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the answer is yes. Their studies show people who use Quitlines are more successful in reaching their smoking cessation goals — and they are also more likely to stay off cigarettes over the long run.

So check out the following list and see if your state offers a Quitline. If you don’t see your state on the list, you can still get smoking cessation information over the phone. All smokers are invited to call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345 (227-2345) to learn about the benefits of tobacco cessation or to find out where to go for help in their areas. Pregnant smokers nationwide are encouraged to call 1-866-66-START (667-8278) to reach the American Legacy Foundation's telephone counseling program for mothers-to-be.
